Last Dash to the Store – a Photo Essay

Previous post on the coronavirus: Eat to resist Covid-19

Chicago’s shelter-in-place order started at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21. I scurried out for a roasting pan at 4:00 p.m. This was my experience. And I’m kidding about this being a “photo essay.” I’m no photographer and this is no “essay.”

At Target I was the only one looking at Easter cards,
but I’m determined to send one to my sister and
maybe a couple of others, considering the circumstances.

At 4:57 p.m. Target was completely out of Hispanics.
For election season, Oreo offers cookies that are all fluff.
This is my el stop. On a Saturday at 6:00 p.m. it would
usually be well-populated with people
heading out to restaurants and…well, you know.

I didn’t think anything would stop this congregation.
I was wrong.
Later my neighbor and I caught up with six feet between us.
Scored a 22-pound turkey from my ex whose restaurant closed,
so today two neighbors and I will have Thanksgiving in March!

My apartment smells so good right now! I could close my eyes and pretend it’s November. Or better yet December!
